TEA PLANTATIONS

The cool temperature, heavy rainfall and humidity levels in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka is the ideal climate needed to produce high quality tea. In appearance the tea plantations are like huge forests made of small bushes, barely four feet in height and grown on the slopes of the contoured terrace lands. Sri Lanka is one of the few countries where the tea leaves are plucked to this day using manual labor.

The first Tea plantation estate in Sri Lanka was established in 1867, namely the Loolecondera estate located southeast of Kandy. The Tea plantations in Sri Lanka can be categorized as per their climate conditions and ground elevations. High grown tea is from plantations in and around the Nuweraeliya district with an elevation of over 6000 feet, where their cool misty climate provides excellent growing conditions for the tea plant.
Tea Plantations in Sri Lanka
Mid-grown Tea is produced in plantations at an altitude of around 2000 feet above sea level, in the Kandy and Badulla areas. The low-grown Tea category is in the Southern Province, where the plantations are about 600 meters above sea level. This Tea variety produces a different aroma with a tinge of Caramel due the dry weather climate and long periods of sunshine.
